Makar remains the main story in Denver
Colorado’s Avalanche remain confident they can reach a new deal with Cale Makar before the start of the season, according to Joe Sakic. The hockey operations president said both sides are still talking and expects an announcement once everything is finished. The confirmed version of the update points the same way: Sakic says he is not worried and hopes the matter will be settled before training camp.
The file matters because Makar is entering the final season of a six-year contract and could become an unrestricted free agent after 2026-27. Colorado is also expecting him to be fully ready when camp opens.
Seattle building the foundation for a rebound
NHL.com also gives plenty of attention to the Seattle Kraken, who are trying to bounce back after missing the playoffs in 2025-26. The piece in the “32 in 32” series highlights the growth of a young forward group and better comfort in Lane Lambert’s system as possible reasons Seattle could get back to being a playoff-calibre team over the full season.
The article notes that Seattle finished 28th in the NHL in goals per game last season and 31st on the penalty kill. It also points to Bobby McMann’s production after coming over from Toronto, along with his new six-year contract signed on June 21. The addition of Mackie Samoskevich in a trade with Florida is presented as another part of the plan. Jason Botterill even suggested there could be seven or eight forwards age 23 or younger in the opening lineup, while Kaapo Kakko named Berkly Catton as a prospect to watch.
Seattle’s top prospects
In a separate Kraken-related piece, NHL.com profiles the organization’s top five prospects for 2026-27. Chase Reid, Jake O’Brien and Oscar Fisker Molgaard are among the names mentioned, along with an overview of their progression and when they might help at the NHL level.
Houle added to the Mammoth system
The Utah Mammoth have officially added Florent Houle to their prospect list this summer. The player, selected 147th overall in the 2026 draft, followed a Quebec development path before spending two seasons with the Sherbrooke Phoenix in the QMJHL. The team also notes his appearance on NHL Central Scouting’s list.
Babcock and the Oilers, under review
A Daily Faceoff item says Leon Draisaitl stated the Oilers want to be coached by Mike Babcock this season. Because this is still being verified, it should be treated cautiously. The source adds that Edmonton hired Babcock in hopes of improving the team’s situation.
