A change he welcomed

Simon Nemec learned about the trade while preparing dinner at home in Slovakia. The news surprised him, but he quickly viewed it as a positive opportunity. He sees the Flames as a young team and believes Calgary can provide a good environment for his next step.

A role still to earn

The defenceman is coming off an 11-goal season in 68 games with the Devils. He said more ice time helped him become increasingly comfortable in a two-way role. His next challenge is turning that progress into regular responsibility with the Flames, although Calgary has not announced his exact role.

Familiar faces in Calgary

Nemec already knows Kevin Bahl from their time in New Jersey. He also contacted fellow Slovaks Martin Pospisil and Sam Honzek after the trade. Those relationships should help his transition before the 2026-27 season.

The trade itself was already confirmed. The new information is Nemec’s reaction, his recent development and how he views his arrival in Calgary — not another transaction.
